tell me something good

March 23rd:
A Wheeling DJ witnesses a slaughtering for a radio stunt. Oh yeah, I'm in a big hurry to get back to West Virginia.

In one of their fairness in reporting doctrines, the FCC requires me to link to meat stinks. Please, just read it.

I don't get this -- how can a kid in Kansas get suspended for drawing a confederate flag in class, when one flies over the capitol in South Carolina? I think this is backwards. (The kid should be able to draw one; the real thing has got no business flying on a government building.) Well, in Kansas public schools they teach creationism, so it's no surprise they don't know much about the First Amendment.

Just smile and act nice.

And...
The Pope may have that cool golf cart thing, but what the Sacred Space team uses looks like a lot more fun.

March 21st:
I joined a happy little webring today. Run by another Torontonian, Jish.

My kid liked the license plate site so much that I found some more fun places for her (and me too!) --

Although clicking the mouse isn't quite as much fun as feeling the bubble-wrap pop between your fingers, the Perputual Bubblewrap site is wonderful because the bubbles regenerate! The sound is just as satisfying as real bubbles too.

To kill even more time, download that newspaper Jumble game. (She's addicted to it.)

And I just love Painter. I forget about it once in awhile, then somehow rediscover it. Makes me want to make a real kaleidoscope.

March 20th:
It's like ebay, but with but with more flannel, snow, poutine, political parties and hockey. I'm going to get addicted to ehbay, I just know it.

I thought that www.monk.com was going to be about real monks writing about the world (perhaps about going to see the World Cup or where to get the best cappuccino), but it's a site by two bohemian type guys who travel around in a subaru van and write about it. Edgy and quirky.

I don't see the Dvorak thing happening. Remember when they told us we had to learn the metric system, because we were going to have to switch over? We don't always like change so much.

I know my kid will be happy to know I'm a Laid Back mom. I suspected as much, but took the ParentSoup quiz anyway.

March 17th:
Here's what I've found to keep distracted today --
Who is taller, Jaromir or Mario?

What is a post-card fairy, and do I want to be one? Yes.

I spent a lot of time reading through the Surrealism Compliments and became convinced that my friend Tonsil is writing for them. My favorite has to be "Teacups smash, flounders ignite spontaneously in your presence."

I looked at the shag art site, which I love, and that prompted me to search for some of my friend's pottery, and I actually found an image at West Liberty State College. His is the big vase thing in the back. And he explains the process of raku firing. He really needs to get his own site...

Out of nowhere I became obsessed with finding the Sylvia Plath poem, Poppies in October.

Finally, I read this Pep Talk (truly amazing) and decided I really should get back to work.

March 14th:
I like the Celebrity LoveMatch quiz, because I took it and got Jim Carrey and Dave Grohl. I have had a huge crush on Dave for quite some time now... Think if he takes the quiz he'll get me?

I love the Hockey Diary and now I want Brian to make one of his own.

Pretend you're in prison and make a license plate. Fun stuff. You have to provide your own orange coveralls though.

March 10th:
I'm off to Wheeling, West Virginia, for three days. Keep yourself busy by dressing Larry (a web-based paper-doll-like dog) for his adventures in the big city.

March 8th:
If you haven't done it yet, take the celebrity Soul-Sister quiz. Harmless fun, really. I got Kristin Scott Thomas, but I'd also get along with Kate Winslet. I'll be inviting both of them over for tea straightaway.

Oooh, goody -- a new Yinzer in Europe installment.

Think I can find a new journal every day? Well, at least for the next three or four years. Anyway, another good one I just found (though it's been around awhile) is I'am A Mother.

McSorley has started a trend -- Ed Belfour was arrested today for assault and resisting arrest.

March 6th:
"Pink rose water rain sprays light beauty on a girl."
Of course I have magnetic poetry on my fridge -- doesn't everyone? If you do and you like it or if you don't and you want to try it -- this Poetry page will get you hooked.

March 3rd:
I know the McSorley story is already old news, but I love what the Onion has to say about it. Especially the "Penguins are from Pittsburgh, Oilers are from Edmonton," bit.

Hey, that gives me a great idea for a book -- Chicken Soup for the Hockey Goon's Soul!

And if you are sick or bored with the internet, just hurry up and get to here.

March 2nd:
Brian sent the link for 15 Megabytes of Fame to me today, and I am absolutely in love. If I could make the page of my dreams, this would be it. Whimsical, simple, smart, silly. Amy, who does the column, has another site, Mommy Mommy which is full of more of her great work, but it's all about parenting.

Elizabeth came up with the coolest idea about paper arts, Paper Travels all about finding good supply stores in different cities. The idea is to have people from all over submit reviews, and this gives me a great excuse to visit the Japanese Paper Place downtown. I've been wanting to check it out for awhile.

I stumbled upon the journal Redemption's Kiss today and I'm already hooked. It's very... different and creative. And so honest.

February 29th:
No one is really addicted to the internet, right? Well, of course there's a test to tell you whether or not you are. I scored 55, which included the message: You could make some extra money out of this fetish.

Okay, I'm a little challenged when it comes to wearing make-up, so I checked out the reflect.com site to give me some help. The coolest thing is you take this quiz in the beginning, and then the pages are designed to appeal to what you like or don't like. And, yeah, they sell products online. But you don't have to buy to take the little quiz.

February 28th:
If you're ever in Pittsburgh you'll want to visit the Heinz Regional History Center. There's a permanent collection about the history of Pittsburgh and the Heinz company. Also, the children's section kicks butt. And sometimes the temporary exhibits offer hands-on activities. (I made an Amish mini-quilt on my first visit.)

And if you like Heinz ketchup, by all means go get a free Ketchup pin. I found out about the place from Heather's freebies and dealies page. She updates it regularly with information about free stuff and special offers, so check it often.

While you're in Pittsburgh, don't forget to check out the awesome Carnegie museums, and give Jaromir a big smooch from me.

One more thing -- I just discovered Elphaba's journal and I'm already addicted. Although I can't figure out what she's doing in that picture...

February 27th:
The La Grotte de Lascaux site is very fun. Your cursor works like a flashlight and you get to discover cave paintings. Just like you're really there. It's brilliant. Well, you have to sort of like that kind of thing, and I do.

Today at ivillage I took a quiz that matches you up with your ideal presidential candidate. I ended up with Bill Bradley (agreeing with him on 60% of the issues asked about) and I was sure I'd get fixed up with Al Gore. I scored higher with McCain than Gore. (I had this entry written in a much more interesting and analytical way, but somehow pitas.com ate it or lost it. I'm too lazy to rewrite it all again.)

Another fun quiz at ivillage is the How Hot is Your Sex Life? quiz. It's only a few questions, and yes, I scored 24-30, which qualifies as "sizzling."

Wednesday, February 23rd:
Although I used to live with someone who thought dumpster-diving was an acceptable way to get food, I really liked Glitter girl Krystyn's article about that very thing. (It's not about getting food.)
Of course, my dad used to get old fruits and vegetables from Jim's Market, but that was for the pigs.

Yes, I love hockey. But what McSorley did was defintely not hockey. I know some people complain about violence in hockey and others love it best when there's a fight, but this wasn't a fight -- it was a direct assault on a player who didn't even see it coming. I hope that people who hear about it know it's an isolated incident and not an acceptable way to play the game.

In other hockey news, the Senators are going to stay in Ottawa because so many fans purchased tickets, which makes me question the whole, "We can't afford to stay here," thing.
The Hamilton Steelheads are still on their way out though. Dammit.

Oh yeah, I did see the the Sens-Canucks game in Ottawa (From a box! Thank you, TechData.), skated on the canal, and ate a beaver tail, which was way better than any elephant ear. It was fried sweet dough covered in gooey, thick, sugary maple and chocolate syrups.

February 17th:
Brian and I are off to bal de neige, or Winterlude, for four days. We'll be skating on the canal, watching the Senators play hockey and eating Beaver Tails, which are supposedly like Elephant Ears, only better.
Au revoir!

February 15th:
Right now I've got The Tragically Hip playing, which reminds me of my friend from Pittsburgh, Kathy Jo Kramer. (She once talked to Gordon Downie on the phone, and sent him a green shirt she bought at a thrift shop.)
Anyway, she's moved to Spain to live with this guy and is writing about her adventures and insights in the column A Yinzer in Europe for the weekly In Pittsburgh. A "yinzer" is someone from Pittsburgh, named that because they say "yinz" the way someone from the south would say "y'all."
Yes, they really say that and they are proud.
Read her stuff. You'll thank me.

Still Sunday:
Oh, this site is so bad and so much FUN! A big selection of bad web pages, grouped into categories like, "goths," "dorks," "greenies," and "rednecks." Go check out the losers on the internet. (Yeah, I'm sure my site will end up there eventually.)

I just found out about this book and I've got to read it -- George Bush, Dark Prince of Love.

Sunday, February 13th:
You must go to Powell's Books (Yes, that's my favorite bookstore. It's in Portland and I miss it terribly.) and download their "Electronic Bookbag" program. It's just a handly little thing you keep on your computer that keeps tracks of all the books you want. (By author name and title.) No more scraps of paper from magazines and newspapers. No more notes to myself on envelopes and grocery receipts. No more getting to the bookstore, knowing that there is a specific book I'm looking for and having no idea what it is. (Although I suppose you'd have to check the list before you go.)

Now if I can just find a way to upload it all to the Palm.

Saturday, February 12th:
So, my favorite tv show, Power Play is getting cancelled. Damn, I hate when that happens. It's an awesome show about a fictional hockey team in Hamilton, Ontario, and it is one of the best written and acted shows I've seen in a long time. All the hockey players are cute and have great teeth, but the show is about a lot more than just the team. Watch it. Write to CTV and tell them not to cancel! What kind of ratings did they expect from a show that airs on Fridays at 8pm?

One more tv note -- try this Ally McBeal drinking game. I'm so disappointed that I didn't play last week when John took all those drinks of water. But I'll be there this Monday.

I just took over editing this site, and I'm excited, even if it's really just keeping links updated. It's something. I also applied to do the mailing list and personal diary hosts lists.

Friday, February 11th, y2K:
Big thanks to Raj for helping me set up this page.
